Progressive Services
In Oxford, the term ‘Progressive’ covers those who wish to follow Liberal or Reform traditions.
Progressive services are usually held on the 2nd Saturday of each month and start at 11.00am. They are about 1¼ -1 ½ hours long and we then join the rest of the community for the communal kiddush. They will normally be held in the Wilfred Faust Hall unless there is a special occasion such as a Bar Mitzvah when we may change places with the Orthodox congregation and use the Main Synagogue.
Men and women sit together and take part equally in the services and we are always glad to have offers of help for leading services, reading a part of the Torah portion or the Haftorah. There are many opportunities to participate directly.
At present all Progressive Services follow the Liberal prayer book, Siddur Lev Chadash, although anyone wishing to lead a Reform Service instead could discuss the possibility with us, as we sometimes change the format. There are versions prepared by the younger members of the congregation and in American style.
There is also a tradition of 'bring-a-dish' lunches held at a member's home after the kiddush so that everyone can get to know each other.
We also hold Liberal Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services in the Wilfred Faust Hall. The details of dates and timings will be on the website or in the membership mailings at appropriate times of the year.
